Catalonia’s capital and by far its most glamorous city, Barcelona is a city in the constant throbbing of art and architecture and nightlife. However, like any other large city in the world the issue of security is always an issue, particularly when it comes to going around the city during the night. In this post of my blog, I am going to focus on the safety issue when walking in Barcelona during night and give some useful recommendations.
Learning about the Barcelona Neighborhoods
Barcelona is a large city that is split into different districts, with different crime rates. Still, one should has some knowledge of these neighborhoods before to be able to choose correctly where it is better to walk at night.
Catalonia is traditional in areas like Eixample, Gracia, and El Born which are safe to walk in during the night. These are dark places, full of people both local and foreign, and one is almost certain to sight officers from the police force patrolling the area.
At the same time, the districts like Raval and some other areas of Ciutat Vella can be quite unsafe, or unsafe in some particular part. Although these areas can be rather picturesque, with their ‘pig alley’ like streets and chic pubs, it is safer to avoid deserted areas especially at night.
General Safety Tips
Whether you’re exploring the safe neighborhoods mentioned above or venturing into other areas, it’s essential to follow general safety guidelines to have a worry-free experience:
Stay in well-lit and crowded areas: Avoid back roads and alleys as well as deserted neighborhoods or any place that can be quite lonely during the night.
Be aware of your surroundings: Stay aware of your environment and don’t be distracted by things such as phones and headphones. Walk erect and on your toes, say stay alert.
Travel in groups: Group or collaborative walking is always safer than walking alone especially at night.
Avoid displaying valuables: Do not carry any forbidden items around your neck or pockets, avoid wearing flashy jewelry or flashy electronics.
Plan your route in advance: This is important to enable you avoid areas that you are not familiar with and plan on how to avoid taking paths you are not certain are safe.
When Taking Public Transport during the Night
There are buses, metro and trams and most of these operate right till late in the night in this city of Barcelona.
For such reasons as; if you can’t walk long distances at night or in some unfamiliar areas, consider using public transport. The metro still stands as a convenient system with especially standard train services and an expanded network of stations.
As it has been mentioned, buses may not be as frequent as during time early in the day or during mid- afternoon. Departing without looking at the hours and coordinating will not be possible. There is, however, a boon service from taxis, Uber, and Cabify within Barcelona and is safe at night for moving around.
Additional Safety Measures
While Barcelona is relatively safe, it’s always a good idea to take some additional precautions:
Save emergency numbers: In case of an emergency be sure to write down some contact numbers of the local police, your consulate or embassy before your travel.
Share your location: Share your plans with someone close to you such as your friend or your closest relation, your planned travel destination and the time you expect to be back.
Use trusted sources for information: Keep abreast of current travel information, local and tourist information agency and other up to date information sources.
Consider travel insurance: That is why it is always good to take a travel insurance that can meet any other mishap or even medical complications that may occur.
Using my guidelines and good sense, you can wander around the beautiful city at night and have the most of your splendid trip.
Just do not forget that while safe is nice, remembering that this is the trip and it is crucial to have fun and enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of Barcelona nights.
